Saint Miltiades

Pope Miltiades, also known as Melchiades the African, served as bishop of Rome from 311 to his death on January 10 or 11, 314. During his pontificate, he witnessed a significant moment in Christian history: Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan (313), legalizing Christianity within the Roman Empire. Miltiades played a crucial role by receiving the palace of Empress Fausta, which later became the site for the construction of the Lateran Palace. This palace served as the papal seat and residence of the papal administration. Additionally, during the schism with the Church of Carthage, he condemned the rebaptism of apostatised bishops and priests, a teaching associated with Donatus Magnus.
