Nikon the Metanoeite (Greek: Νίκων ὁ Μετανοεῖτε, Nikon ho Metanoeite) was a Byzantine monk and itinerant preacher who lived from around 930 to his death on November 26, 998. He is venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church as a saint for his mission to re-Christianize regions of the Byzantine Empire that had been lost due to early Muslim conquests. According to historian Andrew Louth, Nikon's life was chronicled by a successor abbot after his death through a hagiography that emphasized his role as a missionary monk who constantly preached rather than prayed. The biography highlights Nikon’s work on Crete and the central Greek mainland, where he performed numerous miracles both during and after his lifetime.
