Philip the Evangelist, also known as Philip (Greek: Φίλιππος), appears several times in the Acts of the Apostles. According to the New Testament, he was one of the Seven chosen to care for the poor of the Christian community in Jerusalem (Acts 6). His ministry extended beyond his initial duties; he preached and performed miracles in Samaria, and met and baptized an Ethiopian man, a eunuch, on the road from Jerusalem to Gaza. This encounter is traditionally seen as marking the start of the Ethiopian Church (Acts 8:26–39). Later, Philip resided in Caesarea Maritima with his four daughters who prophesied, where he was visited by Paul the Apostle (Acts 21:8–9). His life and ministry are celebrated on October 11th.
Philip's role as one of the Seven is significant; they were chosen to address a complaint among Greek-speaking Jews that their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. Philip's preaching and miracles, particularly his encounter with the Ethiopian eunuch, highlight his importance in spreading Christianity. His residence in Caesarea Maritima further underscores his continued involvement in the early Christian community.
Philip is venerated for his role in establishing the Church in Ethiopia and for his prophetic daughters. He is remembered for his faithfulness to Christ and his contributions to the spread of the Gospel.
