Saint Romano

Vincenzo Romano, born Vincenzo Domenico Romano on June 3, 1751, in Torre del Greco, Naples, Italy, was a Roman Catholic priest known for his simplicity and dedication to the poor. He served as a parish priest in Herculano, where he cared deeply for orphans and worked tirelessly to meet their needs. His commitment extended beyond his parish; Romano also devoted himself to rebuilding much of Naples following the 1794 eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Despite facing oppression from French invaders and Italian political groups, he continued his work with unwavering dedication. The people of Torre del Greco honored him with the nickname 'The Worker Priest' for his tireless efforts on behalf of the poor. His life was marked by humility and service, earning him recognition as a holy man. After his death on December 20, 1831, he was beatified in late 1963 by Pope Paul VI, and his canonization was confirmed by Pope Francis, celebrated in Saint Peter's Square on October 14, 2018.
