Sergius of Radonezh, born on 14 May 1314 and died on 25 September 1392, was a Russian Orthodox spiritual leader and monastic reformer who founded the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius near Moscow. This monastery became the most venerated monastic house in Russia, exerting significant influence on the Russian Orthodox Church. Together with Seraphim of Sarov, he is one of the most highly venerated saints in Russia. Historian Serge Aleksandrovich Zenkovsky noted that Sergius, along with Epiphanius the Wise, Stephen of Perm, and Andrei Rublev, represented a significant spiritual and cultural revival in late fourteenth and early fifteenth-century Russia.
