Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius, commonly known simply as Boethius (c. 480 – 524 AD), was a Roman senator and polymath who played a crucial role in the translation of Greek classics into Latin during the Early Middle Ages. Born in Rome shortly after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, he was orphaned following his family's decline and raised by Quintus Aurelius Memmius Symmachus, a later consul. Boethius rose to prominence as a statesman under the Ostrogothic Kingdom, becoming a senator at 25 and a consul at 33. He sought to reconcile Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy with Christian theology, publishing numerous transcriptions and commentaries of Greek works such as those by Nicomachus, Porphyry, and Cicero. Despite his successes, he was imprisoned in 523 for denouncing government corruption, where he wrote 'On the Consolation of Philosophy.' Boethius was executed in 524, becoming a martyr in Christian tradition.
