Saint Simone

Simone Antonio Pacoret de Saint-Bon was born on March 20, 1828, at Chambéry, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia (now in France). He served as an admiral in the Italian Regia Marina and played a significant role in the development of the modern Italian fleet. After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1847, Saint-Bon rose through the ranks to become a commander by 1860 and a vice-admiral by 1867. His military career was marked by distinguished service during the Crimean War, including notable actions at the sieges of Ancona and Gaeta, for which he received decorations such as the Gold Medal of Military Valor. He also served as Minister of the Navy from 1873 to 1876, where he introduced revolutionary designs for battleships that transformed the Italian naval fleet. Saint-Bon died on November 26, 1892, while still in office at Rome, remembered as a key figure in the modernization of Italy’s maritime forces.
