Saint Sophronius

Saint Sophronius, born around 560 and venerated as a saint in both the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic Churches, was a prominent theologian and monk before becoming the Greek Patriarch of Jerusalem from 634 until his death on March 11, 638. His contributions to Christian theology were significant; he was a key figure in the doctrinal controversy concerning the essential nature of Jesus Christ and His volitional acts. This controversy, often referred to as the Christological debate, centered around the nature of Christ's divinity and humanity. Additionally, Saint Sophronius played an important role in negotiating the surrender of Aelia Capitolina (modern-day Jerusalem) to the Rashid caliph Umar during the Muslim conquests. His legacy is remembered for his theological work and diplomatic skills.
