Saint Teresa of Jesus

Teresa of Ávila, born Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda Dávila y Ahumada on March 28, 1515, and given the religious name Teresa of Jesus, was a prominent Spanish mystic and spiritual reformer. Active during the Counter-Reformation, she became central to a movement of monastic renewal within the Carmelite orders, both for women and men. Alongside her younger Carmelite friar and mystic colleague Saint John of the Cross, she established the Discalced Carmelites in 1562. Her life's work included writing significant works on Christian mysticism such as The Life of Teresa of Jesus, The Interior Castle, and The Way of Perfection. These writings detail her mystical experiences and provide spiritual guidance to her fellow nuns. In 1580, a formal papal decree recognized the split from the old Carmelite order. Teresa died on October 4 or 15, 1582, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence Christian spirituality. Her works have been widely studied and are considered essential texts in Christian mysticism.
