Theophanes the Confessor, or Theophanes of the Great Field (c. 759 – 817 or 818), was a Byzantine aristocrat who later became a monk and chronicler. He served in the court of Emperor Leo IV the Khazar before embracing monastic life. Theophanes played a significant role in resisting iconoclasm, particularly under the reign of Leo V the Armenian, for which he faced imprisonment. He attended the Second Council of Nicaea in 787 and continued to advocate against the destruction of religious images. After his release from prison, Theophanes passed away shortly thereafter.
