Saint Thorlak Thorhallsson, born around 1133 and died on December 23, 1193, was a prominent figure in Icelandic church history and the patron saint of Iceland. He served as Bishop of Skálholt from 1178 until his death. After his passing, his relics were translated to the Cathedral of Skálholt in 1198. His veneration began shortly after, with Páll Jónsson, his successor, declaring that vows could be made to Thorlak at the Althing. Official recognition as a saint came much later on January 14, 1984, when Pope John Paul II canonized him and declared him Iceland's patron saint. The feast day of Saint Thorlak is celebrated annually on December 23, with his Mass being commemorated in Iceland.
