Saint Vladimir

Vladimir I Sviatoslavich, known as Vladimir the Great (Old East Slavic: Володимѣръ Свѧтославичь; c. 958 – 15 July 1015), was Prince of Novgorod from 970 and Grand Prince of Kiev from 978 until his death in 1015. Born into the Rurik dynasty, Vladimir's rule saw significant consolidation of power across Eastern Europe. After his father Sviatoslav I died in 972, Vladimir faced a challenge when his brother Yaropolk murdered their other brother Oleg in 977 to become the sole ruler of Rus'. In response, Vladimir assembled a Varangian army and returned to depose Yaropolk in 978. By 980, he had extended his control as far as the Baltic Sea, securing his borders against incursions from Bulgarians, Baltic tribes, and Eastern nomads. Originally a follower of Slavic paganism, Vladimir converted to Christianity in 988, initiating the Christianization of Kievan Rus'. The Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church both canonized him as Saint Vladimir for his significant contributions to the spiritual and political unification of Eastern Europe.
