San Damiano Cam

Saint Ðaminh Cam, also known as Domenic Cam, was born in Cam Chuong, Bac Ninh, Vietnam. He dedicated his life to serving God as a priest in the apostolic vicariate of Tonkin, which is now modern Vietnam. Being a member of the Fraternity of Dominican Priests, Ðaminh Cam lived during a time of intense persecution under the reign of emperor Tu-Duc. During this period, Ðaminh Cam courageously ministered to covert Catholics, providing spiritual guidance and administering the sacraments in secret. Despite the constant threat of discovery and capture, he remained steadfast in his mission to support and strengthen the Catholic community. Unfortunately, Ðaminh Cam's efforts to uphold the faith eventually led to his capture by the authorities. He was imprisoned for years, enduring repeated tortures and suffering with unwavering faith and resilience. His refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs and loyalty to the Church inspired many fellow prisoners, who saw in him a true example of faith, hope, and love. Finally, on 11th March 1859, Ðaminh Cam was martyred for his faith. He was beheaded in Hung Yên, Vietnam, sealing his commitment to Christ and the Catholic Church. His martyrdom marked the culmination of a life dedicated to service and defense of the faith. In recognition of his sacrifice, Ðaminh Cam was venerated on 11th February 1951 by Pope Pius XII, who issued a decree of martyrdom. On 29th April 1951, Pope Pius XII beatified him, acknowledging his exemplary life and heroic death. Later, on 19th June 1988, Ðaminh Cam was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II, further affirming his sanctity and his eternal place in heaven. Though not commonly associated with a specific patronage, Saint Ðaminh Cam's memory and example certainly serve as an inspiration for all those who face persecution for their faith or struggle to maintain their Catholic identity in challenging circumstances. His unwavering dedication to God's truth and his willingness to sacrifice his life for the faith continue to resonate with believers worldwide.
