Saint Candidus of Trebizond was one of four martyrs—along with Eugenios, Valerian, and Aquila—who were persecuted during the reigns of Diocletian (284-305) and Maximian (305-311). The group hid in the mountains above Trebizond but were eventually discovered by the regimental commander Lycius. They endured severe torture, including flogging and being burned with fire, before being beheaded. Tradition holds that Saint Eugenios was credited with destroying an image on a 'gray hill' overlooking the city, later known as the Mithratis. The four martyrs are commemorated together on 21 January in the Orthodox Church.
