San Eulogio de Córdoba

Saint Eulogius of Cordoba, also known as Saint Eulogius of Córdoba, was a prominent Catholic saint who lived during the period of Islamic persecutions in Moorish occupied Spain. Born into a senatorial family in Cordoba, Spain, Eulogius received an excellent education and later became a priest. He also served as the head of an ecclesiastical school. Eulogius played a significant role in comforting and supporting Christian martyrs and their survivors during a time when Christians faced severe persecution under Muslim rule. His commitment to assisting and encouraging those who suffered for their faith led to his arrest multiple times. During one of his imprisonments, Eulogius wrote a notable work known as the "Exhortation to Martyrdom." In this influential text, he encouraged fellow Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and willingly embrace martyrdom if necessary. His writings became an enduring testimony to the courage and conviction of the Christian martyrs during that tumultuous period. Eulogius was appointed to succeed the Archbishop of Toledo, Spain, but he never had the opportunity to be consecrated. Nevertheless, he continued his work promoting and defending the Christian faith and assisting the persecuted. Eventually, Saint Eulogius of Cordoba was imprisoned for providing shelter to Saint Leocritia of Cordoba, who was a Christian convert from Islam. Despite being imprisoned, Eulogius boldly seized the opportunity to preach the Gospel in court, even in front of the king's counsel. Eulogius's fearless proclamation of the Gospel ultimately led to his martyrdom. On 11th March 859, he was scourged and beheaded in Cordoba, Spain. His death solidified his status as a martyr for the Christian faith. Following his execution, some relics of Saint Eulogius were translated to Paris, France, in the early 860s. Although Saint Eulogius of Cordoba was recognized as a saint prior to the formal establishment of the Catholic Church's canonization process, he is considered a pre-congregation saint. Saint Eulogius is venerated as the patron saint of carpenters and coppersmiths, reflecting his connection with skilled craftsmen. His feast day is commemorated on 11th March each year.
