San Felice de Nicosia

Saint Felice of Nicosia, also known as Felice Amoroso of Nicosia or Filippo Giacomo Amoroso, was born on 5 November 1715 in Nicosia, Italy. He was the son of a shoemaker and learned his father's trade at a young age. Felice was known for his piety and hard work even as a youth. At the age of 19, Felice attempted to enter a Capuchin convent but was turned away. Undeterred, he persisted and tried again and again for eight years before finally being admitted on 19 October 1743. He took the name Felix upon entering the religious order. For the next 40 years, he served as a beggar for his house, dedicating himself to a life of poverty and humility. Saint Felice had a deep devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and was known for his great love and reverence towards it. He had the gift of healing, both physical and spiritual, and was also believed to have the ability of bilocation. Many people sought his help and witnessed miraculous healings through his intercession. One notable event in Saint Felice's life was his tireless work during a plague epidemic that struck Cerami, Italy in March 1777. Despite the dangers posed by the outbreak, Felice fearlessly attended to the sick, healing many and remaining untouched by the disease himself. His devotion and obedience to his Order were exemplary. Saint Felice was so devoted to his vow of obedience that he even asked his guardian for permission to die. Such was his commitment to fulfilling God's will as a Capuchin friar. Saint Felice of Nicosia lived a life of extraordinary faith and service. His humble and selfless nature endeared him to those around him. He faithfully carried out his duties within the religious community while also ministering to the needs of the people. His reputation for holiness grew throughout his life and after his death. Saint Felice's heroic virtues were recognized by Pope Pius IX, who declared him venerable on 4 March 1862. Later, on 12 February 1888, Pope Leo XIII beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity. Finally, on 23 October 2005, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Saint Felice of Nicosia, declaring him a saint of the Catholic Church. Although Saint Felice does not have a specific patronage, his life serves as an inspiration to all who seek to follow Christ with humility, compassion, and unwavering faith. His feast day is celebrated on 31 May, the day of his death.
