Biografía

Saint Gioan Ðat, also known as Giovanni, Johannes, or John, was born around the year 1765 in Ðong Chuoi, Thanh Hóa, Vietnam. He was a dedicated Catholic priest who served as a parish priest in the apostolic vicariate of West Tonkin. Gioan Ðat was ordained in 1798, but his religious journey was soon met with adversity.

Shortly after his ordination, Gioan Ðat was arrested by authorities due to his unwavering faith. As one of the Martyrs of Vietnam, he endured persecution and imprisonment. Despite facing immense hardship, Gioan Ðat remained steadfast in his commitment to God and the Catholic Church. It is believed that he displayed great courage and resilience during his captivity.

Tragically, Gioan Ðat's life was cut short on October 28, 1798, when he was martyred in Cho Ra, Thanh Hóa, Vietnam. His unwavering faith and sacrifice for his beliefs have been venerated and celebrated.

Pope Leo XIII officially recognized the martyrdom of Saint Gioan Ðat on July 2, 1899, and he was subsequently beatified on May 27, 1900, by the same pope. His canonization, declaring him a saint, took place on June 19, 1988, by Pope John Paul II.

Although specific details about his representation or patronage are not available, the life and martyrdom of Saint Gioan Ðat continue to inspire and serve as a testimony of the enduring power of faith. His story can be found in various books, including the "Book of Saints" and "Our Sunday Visitor's Encyclopedia of Saints."
