San Gohardus de Nantes

Saint Gohardus of Nantes, also known as Gohard, Gunardo, or Goardo, was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church during the 9th century. Born in the 8th century in Angers, Neustria (modern France), Gohardus dedicated his life to serving God and the Church. Gohardus was ordained as a bishop and held the esteemed position of Bishop of Nantes, France. Known for his piety, wisdom, and diligence, he was deeply loved and respected by the people he shepherded. However, tragedy struck on the fateful day of June 24, 843, when Norman raiders attacked Nantes. Gohardus was celebrating Mass with a large group of monks and priests in the Cathedral of Saint Peter when the raiders stormed in. Unwavering in his faith even in the face of danger, Gohardus continued to lead the Eucharistic celebration. As he offered the sacred liturgy, he was mercilessly slain by the raiders, becoming a martyr for his faith. Gohardus' martyrdom left a lasting impact on the faithful of Nantes and beyond. His reputation for holiness and devotion to the Church grew in the years following his death, with reports of miracles attributed to his intercession. In recognition of his martyrdom and his holiness, Pope Urban II canonized Gohardus in 1096. This official recognition by the Holy See elevated Gohardus to the status of a saint within the Catholic Church. Although there is no specific representation or patronage commonly associated with Saint Gohardus, the faithful continue to venerate him as an inspiration and intercessor in times of persecution and violence. The remains of Saint Gohardus were initially laid to rest in the cemetery of the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter in Angers, France. However, some relics of his body were later enshrined in the cathedral in Nantes, ensuring his enduring presence and veneration in the city he served. Each year on June 24th, the feast day of Saint Gohardus is celebrated by the faithful, commemorating his martyrdom and the example of steadfast faith he left behind. Saint Gohardus of Nantes, a martyr and bishop, continues to be revered as an emblem of unwavering dedication to God and the Church, serving as an inspiration for Catholics around the world.
