Biografía

Saint Guillermo De Peñacorada, also known as Guglielmo or William, was a celebrated Benedictine monk who lived in Sahagún, León, Spain during the early medieval period. Born in Spain, Guillermo dedicated his life to serving God and the Church, leaving a lasting impact on the spiritual and cultural heritage of his region. During his time at Sahagún, Guillermo and his fellow monks faced a significant threat when invading Saracens approached their monastery. In order to protect themselves and their religious community, Guillermo and his brothers made the courageous decision to flee from Sahagún. They sought refuge in the Peñacorada mountains located near Cistierna, Spain. In the Peñacorada mountains, Guillermo and the displaced monks established a new monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This monastery, named Santa Maria de los Valles, became a symbol of resilience, as it stood as a testament to the monks' commitment to their faith amidst adversity. Guillermo played a pivotal role in the construction and development of this monastery, serving as its abbot. In recognition of Guillermo's unwavering devotion and leadership, the monastery of Santa Maria de los Valles was later renamed San Guillermo de Peñacorada in his honor. This act not only highlighted Guillermo's instrumental role in the monastery's establishment but also served to preserve his memory for future generations. Saint Guillermo De Peñacorada lived a life characterized by his commitment to both God and his community. His dedication as a monk and abbot left a lasting impact, not only on the monastery of San Guillermo de Peñacorada but also on the wider religious landscape of Spain. Guillermo's reputation as a holy and pious man extended beyond his works and deeds during his lifetime, leading to his veneration as a saint by the faithful in the Pre-Congregation era. Regrettably, the details of Saint Guillermo De Peñacorada's life are scarce, making it difficult to paint a comprehensive picture of his life and accomplishments. However, his feast day is celebrated on the 20th of March each year, a day that allows us to honor and remember his saintly contributions to the Church. Saint Guillermo De Peñacorada holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Cistierna, Spain, as he is recognized as the patron saint of their town. Through his faith, resilience, and dedication to serving God, Guillermo left an indelible mark on the spiritual heritage of his beloved Spain. Though he passed away around the year 1042, Saint Guillermo De Peñacorada continues to inspire and guide believers to this day.
