San Hermes de Roma

Saint Hermes of Rome, also known as Ermete, was born into a life of slavery in Rome in the first century. He was fortunate enough to be freed from bondage and went on to achieve great wealth and success as a Roman citizen. Hermes was not only known for his social standing but also for his deep devotion to the Christian faith. He saw the teachings of Jesus as a way to bring true liberation and freedom to all people, and he dedicated his life to spreading the message of God's love and mercy. Hermes had a close relationship with his sister, Saint Theodora of Rome, who was also a devout Christian. Together, they would share their faith with others, encouraging them to embrace Christianity and leave behind the pagan beliefs of the time. However, the Roman Empire was hostile towards Christians during this period, and practicing the faith often meant facing persecution and even death. Despite the risks, Hermes and Theodora continued their mission of evangelization, fearlessly proclaiming the Gospel and converting many to Christianity. Sadly, their courageous efforts eventually caught the attention of the Roman authorities. Hermes and Theodora were arrested and brought before the magistrate on charges of spreading a forbidden religion. Refusing to renounce their faith, they were sentenced to death. In approximately 125 AD, Hermes and Theodora were martyred in Rome for their unwavering commitment to Christ. Their executions were brutal, yet they faced their deaths with immense courage and faith. It is believed that Hermes was tortured and martyred in a particularly gruesome manner. Following their deaths, the remains of Saint Hermes were distributed and venerated in various locations. His relics can be found in Acquapendente, Italy; Salzburg, Austria; Kornelimünster Abbey; San Marco of Rome, Italy; and Seligenstadt, Germany. Throughout the centuries, the memory of Saint Hermes of Rome has been honored by the Catholic Church. Although his appearance is not clearly represented in art, his feast day is celebrated on August 28th each year. He is considered a patron saint of Acquapendente, Italy, as well as Forte dei Marmi and Lucca, Italy. Saint Hermes stands as a shining example of perseverance and unwavering faith in the face of persecution. His life serves as an inspiration to all Christians to remain steadfast in their beliefs and to continue spreading the message of God's love, no matter the challenges they may face.
