Santo
San Jacques Berthieu
Jesuit priest, missionary in Madagascar, martyr, 1838-1896
Early life
Jacques Berthieu was born on 27 November 1838 at Polminhac, in the department of Cantal near Aurillac, France, and was baptised the same day; he attended primary school in his village and then studied with the Fratelli delle Scuole Cristiane at Aurillac.[1] At 15 his father allowed him to enter the minor seminary of Pléaux; at the end of his secondary studies he passed to the major seminary of Saint-Flour, where he was ordained priest on 21 May 1863.[1] The bishop named him vicar in the parish of Roannes-Saint-Mary, where he served for nine years; in 1873, already 34, he entered the Society of Jesus, joining the young novices at Pau, and the following year moved to the theology students at Vals.[1]
Mission
On 26 September 1875 he sailed from Marseille, bound for Madagascar.[1] On the island of Sainte Marie his time was taken up with catechism, visits to Christians, baptisms, first communions and marriages, as well as care of the sick and the lepers, and he also taught the local people rational farming.[1] In 1881, because of the decrees expelling religious from French territories, he had to leave the island like the other Jesuits.[1] He reached the new mission centre of Ambositra on 3 July 1886.[1] In 1894 he had to leave his community again and return to Andrainarivo, where bands of rebels had risen against the French and saw in the missionaries those who had made their divinities and amulets lose their power.[1]
Martyrdom
Worn out and struck by fever, he was carried to Tananarive, recovered, and on 21 May rejoined his people; on 7 June the military authorities ordered the roughly 2,000 refugees with him to set out at once for Tananarive under a French escort.[1] About three kilometres north of the market of Talata the Ménalamba attacked; he reached Ambohibemasoandro, celebrated Mass there on the morning of 8 June, and that afternoon was captured, wounded in the neck with a hatchet, and stripped of the crucifix he wore, answering that he would go on praying until death.[1] Near the village of Ambiatibe six armed men were brought forward; he knelt, and when a chief offered to spare him if he renounced his religion, he replied that he could not consent and preferred to die.[1] Further shots missed, a fifth struck him in the back without killing him, and the captain then killed him with a shot to the back of the head, on 8 June 1896.[1]
Recognition
He was beatified on 17 October 1965 by Pope Paul VI.[1] He was canonised on 21 October 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI in St Peter's Square.[1]
