San Jarlath de Tuam

Saint Jarlath of Tuam, also known as Iarlaith, Iarlath, or Jarleth, was born around 445 in Connaught, Galway, Ireland. He came from a noble family and displayed a strong inclination towards spirituality from a young age. Recognizing his potential, his parents sent him to be educated under the esteemed Saint Benignus. Under the guidance of Saint Benignus, Jarlath immersed himself in the study of theology and scripture. He grew in holiness and understanding, becoming a dedicated priest. After completing his studies, he felt called to establish a place of learning where others could deepen their knowledge of God. In obedience to this calling, Jarlath founded a monastery and college at Cluain Fois, located outside Tuam in Galway, Ireland. The institution quickly gained a reputation for its academic excellence, attracting scholars from all over Ireland, including renowned figures such as Saint Brendan of Ardfert and Saint Colman of Cloyne. Jarlath served as the abbot and bishop of this monastery-school, guiding and nurturing the spiritual growth of its inhabitants. Throughout his life, Jarlath maintained a close spiritual relationship with Saint Enda of Arran, who was his mentor and teacher. As a result, Jarlath was blessed with a prophetic gift. He often shared divinely inspired words of wisdom and foresight, offering guidance to his community and beyond. Saint Jarlath's impact extended far beyond the walls of his monastery. He became known as the founder of the diocese of Tuam, which grew to be a significant center of Catholicism in Ireland. His dedication to education, spiritual formation, and the spread of the faith made him a beloved figure among the people. Saint Jarlath passed away peacefully around 540, succumbing to natural causes. His relics were laid to rest at Kilmainemore, in Ireland. Recognizing his exemplary life and countless contributions to the growth of the Church, Saint Jarlath was canonized as a saint before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Today, Saint Jarlath is venerated as the patron saint of Tuam, Ireland, and the archdiocese of Tuam. His feast day is commemorated on June 6th, a day dedicated to celebrating his holy life and seeking his intercession. The life of Saint Jarlath of Tuam serves as a model of faith, humility, and dedication to education. His legacy as the founder of the diocese and his commitment to spiritual growth continue to inspire believers even today.
