San Juan de Tlaxcala

Saint Juan of Tlaxcala, also known as Juan de Tizatlán, was born around the year 1516-1517 in Tizatlán, Tlaxcala, Mexico. He is widely recognized as one of the Three Child Martyrs of Tlaxcala, along with his companions Cristobal and Antonio. Juan's life was marked by his unwavering faith and commitment to the Christian faith in the face of persecution and adversity. Juan's profound journey of faith began with his encounter with Blessed Antonio de Acatzingo, a Franciscan lay brother who had been the slave of illustrious parents before embracing the Christian faith. Inspired by Antonio's teachings and example, Juan made the courageous decision to convert to Christianity. This decision, however, met with opposition from the local indigenous community who adhered to their traditional religious practices. Despite the challenges and risks, Juan remained steadfast in his newfound faith. His devotion to Blessed Antonio deepened, and he became a faithful and devoted servant to the holy lay brother. Both Juan and Antonio lived an exemplary life, spreading the message of Christ's love and compassion to those around them. Sadly, their witness to the Gospel ultimately led to their martyrdom. In 1529, Juan, Antonio, and Cristobal were brutally beaten to death with clubs in Cuauhtinchán, Puebla, Mexico. Their steadfast faith and willingness to die for their beliefs became a powerful testimony to the Christian faith and inspired many. The Catholic Church officially recognized their martyrdom on March 3, 1990, through a decree issued by Pope John Paul II. Only a few months later, on May 6, 1990, Pope John Paul II beatified Juan, Antonio, and Cristobal, affirming their heroic virtues and their willingness to sacrifice their lives for the sake of their faith. The beatification ceremony took place at Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Italy. Finally, on October 15, 2017, Pope Francis canonized Saint Juan of Tlaxcala, along with his companions, as a testimony to their sanctity and steadfastness in the face of persecution. The canonization recognition ceremony was held at Saint Peter's Basilica and was presided over by Pope Francis himself. Saint Juan of Tlaxcala is venerated as a martyr, a model of faith, and a testament to the power of unwavering devotion to Christ. He stands as an inspiration for all believers, highlighting the importance of remaining steadfast in one's faith, even in the face of adversity and danger. Though specific patronages are not attributed to Saint Juan of Tlaxcala, his life and example continue to inspire individuals to embrace and live out their Christian faith with courage and conviction.
