San Lucas Hwang Soktu

Saint Lucas Hwang Soktu, also known as Luca Hwang Sok-tu, Luka, Luke, or Lugar, was born in 1813 in Yonp’ung, Ch’ungch’ong, South Korea. He was the only child in a wealthy family and received a privileged upbringing. As he embarked on a journey to study in Seoul, Lucas had a fateful encounter with a person who introduced him to Christianity. Although his family strongly opposed his newfound interest in the faith, Lucas defied their objections and converted to Christianity. His dedication and faith were so influential that eventually his entire family converted as well. Lucas, who was married, pursued his career as a teacher of Chinese literature while also serving as a catechist. Lucas played a significant role in spreading the teachings of Christianity in Korea. He co-wrote some works of Saint Siméon-François Berneux, a missionary who dedicated his life to evangelizing in East Asia. Lucas' collaboration in writing these works demonstrated his commitment to sharing the Gospel and supporting the faith. Alongside his duties as a teacher and catechist, Lucas served as a personal assistant to Saint Marie-Nicolas-Antoine Daveluy. This position allowed him to deepen his understanding of the faith and strengthen his spiritual devotion. However, Lucas' faith and works for the Church eventually led to his persecution. In a time of great religious and social turmoil in Korea, he was arrested, imprisoned, and ultimately executed for his refusal to renounce his faith. On 30 March 1866, he was beheaded in Galmaemot, Boryeong, Chungcheong-do, South Korea, thus sealing his martyrdom. Lucas Hwang Soktu was recognized for his enduring faith and sacrifice. He was venerated on 4 July 1968 by Pope Paul VI through a decree of martyrdom. On 6 October 1968, Pope Paul VI beatified him, acknowledging his status as a Blessed. Finally, on 6 May 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized him, officially declaring him a Saint of the Catholic Church. As a Catholic martyr, Saint Lucas Hwang Soktu is commemorated on 30 March and also on 20 September, along with other Korean Martyrs. Through his life and death, he continues to inspire believers with his unwavering commitment to the Christian faith and his courage in the face of persecution.
