San Magino de Tarragona

Saint Magino of Tarragona, also known as Magi, Magin, or Maginus, was born to the noble family of Burgundy in modern-day France. Unfortunately, he became an orphan at a young age and was left to his own devices. Despite this adversity, Magino demonstrated an early inclination towards a life of solitude and prayer. He eventually found solace as a hermit on Mount Brufagaña, where he would spend the next three decades in deep contemplation and communion with God. It was during this time that Magino's extraordinary gift of healing through prayer began to emerge. His deep faith and ardent prayers led to the miraculous healing of the governor of Tarragona, Spain. News of Magino's miraculous abilities quickly spread throughout the region, capturing the attention of the authorities. In the midst of the persecutions instigated by the Roman Emperor Diocletian against Christians, Magino's reputation brought him to the attention of the emperor's agents. They soon seized him and brought him before the authorities in Tarragona. Despite enduring imprisonment, torture, and various forms of punishment, Magino's devotion to his faith remained unyielding. He faced his sufferings with unwavering strength and an unshakeable spiritual resolve. Ultimately, Magino met his martyrdom by beheading with a sickle in Tarragona, Spain, around the year 304. In recognition of his exemplary life and unwavering faith, Magino was canonized as a saint, though the exact date of his canonization remains unknown, as it occurred before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. As a result, he is considered a Pre-Congregation saint. Saint Magino of Tarragona is venerated as the patron saint of Tarragona, Spain. He is often depicted in religious art wielding a staff, through which he is said to have caused springs to erupt from the ground. This representation symbolizes his miraculous healing through prayer and the profound impact his faith and devotion had on the people he encountered. Devotees honor Saint Magino's memory and seek his intercession on his feast day, which is celebrated on the 19th of August each year.
