San Manuel Moralez

Saint Manuel Moralez, also known as Manuel Morales or Emmanuel, was born on 8 February 1898 in Mesillas, Zacatecas, Mexico. He grew up in a poverty-stricken family and faced several challenges throughout his life. Although he had a strong inclination towards entering the seminary, Manuel had to leave in order to support his family financially. He remained a lifelong layman and embraced his vocation outside of the priesthood. Married and the father of three children, Manuel dedicated himself to serving the Catholic Church through various roles. He held the position of Secretary of the publication Leon XIII, which allowed him to contribute to the spread of the Catholic faith through written works. Additionally, he served as the Secretary of the Circle of Catholic Workers, where he actively engaged in promoting Catholic social teachings and advocating for the rights of laborers. Manuel's commitment to his faith led him to become a member of Catholic Action (ACJM), an organization focused on promoting Catholic values in society. One of Manuel's notable achievements was becoming the President of the National League for the Defense of Religious Liberty (LNDLR). In this role, he worked tirelessly to protect the religious freedoms of Catholics in Mexico. On 29 July 1929, a LNDLR meeting took place, drawing a crowd of over 500 individuals. During his speech at the gathering, Manuel emphasized the peaceful and non-political aims and methods of the group, highlighting their dedication to defending religious liberty. However, a few days later, a group of soldiers apprehended Manuel and the other LNDLR officers. They announced that they were taking them to the state capital to explain their position to government officials. Unfortunately, the soldiers stopped the cars along the way and accused the prisoners of plotting armed revolt against the government. Despite the opportunity to secure his freedom by acknowledging the legitimacy of Manuel Calle's anti-religious government, Manuel chose to remain steadfast in his faith and refused to compromise. As a result of his unwavering commitment to Catholic principles, Manuel Moralez was martyred. On 15 August 1926, he was shot by a firing squad in the mountains near Chalchihuites, Zacatecas, Mexico. This act of martyrdom demonstrated his loyalty to the Church and his refusal to renounce his faith even in the face of persecution. The recognition of Manuel Moralez's martyrdom came later, on 7 March 1992, when Pope John Paul II declared him venerable. On 22 November 1992, Pope John Paul II beatified Manuel, acknowledging his martyrdom and officially conferring the status of Blessed upon him. Finally, on 21 May 2000, during the Jubilee of Mexico, Pope John Paul II canonized Manuel Moralez as a saint, recognizing his sacrifice and devotion to the Catholic faith. While there is no specific patronage associated with Saint Manuel Moralez, his life provides inspiration for individuals facing adversity and struggling to stay true to their faith. His selflessness, integrity, and courage serve as a model for all, reminding us to remain steadfast in the face of persecution and to uphold the principles of religious liberty.
