Biografía
Saint Maria An Guoshi, also known as Mali, was a married lay woman who lived in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili in China. She was born around 1836 in Anping, Hebei, China. Not much is known about her early life, but she eventually married and settled down in Liugongying, Shenzhou, Hebei. During the Boxer Rebellion in the late 19th century, which was a violent anti-Christian and anti-foreign movement in China, Saint Maria An Guoshi remained steadfast in her faith despite the dangerous circumstances. She, along with her husband, endured persecution along with other Catholics in the region. On July 11, 1900, Saint Maria An Guoshi met her martyrdom when she was beheaded in Liugongying. Her courageous witness to the Christian faith in the face of extreme adversity was a testament to her devotion to God and her unwavering belief in the teachings of her Catholic faith. Recognizing her martyrdom and the exemplary virtues she displayed, Pope Pius XII declared her venerable on February 22, 1955, issuing a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging her selfless sacrifice for the sake of her faith. Just a few months later, on April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII further bestowed the honor of beatification upon her. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Saint Maria An Guoshi was officially canonized by Pope John Paul II, affirming her status as a saint in the Catholic Church. Her canonization not only recognized her individual sanctity, but also honored her as one of the many martyrs of China who gave their lives for their faith during the Boxer Rebellion. While there are no specific patronages associated with Saint Maria An Guoshi, her example of unwavering faith and sacrificial love can inspire and guide all Catholics, especially those facing persecution or struggling to embrace their faith in challenging circumstances. Saint Maria An Guoshi's life continues to serve as a reminder of the Christian call to remain faithful even in the face of adversity and violence.
