Biografía

Saint Mariano of Acerenza, also known as Saint Mariano of Ripacandida, was a courageous deacon and preacher during a time of great persecution against Christians. Born in the 3rd century in either Acerenza or Ripacandida, Italy, little is known about his early life. However, his unwavering faith and commitment to spreading the Gospel eventually led him to a life of martyrdom. Saint Mariano is most prominently remembered as a close friend of Saint Laviero, another courageous figure of early Christianity. Together, they embarked on a mission to propagate the teachings of Christ, despite the intense hostility and violence faced by Christians under the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Their friendship and shared commitment to defending the faith greatly strengthened their resolve and emboldened their ministries. Saint Mariano's role as a deacon positioned him as a leader within the Christian community. He fearlessly expressed his beliefs and preached the Gospel, even amidst threats and persecution. His unwavering dedication earned him the admiration and respect of believers in Acerenza, Ripacandida, and their neighboring towns. Sadly, Saint Mariano's unyielding commitment to his faith eventually led to his martyrdom. In the year 303, during the height of Diocletian's brutal persecution against Christians, Saint Mariano was arrested and imprisoned. Despite enduring severe torture and cruel treatment, he never renounced his faith nor wavered in his commitment to Christ. Eventually, he was executed in Grumentum, modern-day Grumento Nova, Italy, sealing his place as a martyr for the Christian faith. Saint Mariano's unwavering faith and courage in the face of great adversity have been an inspiration to believers throughout the ages. Although information about his representation remains unknown, his memory and witness continue to be honored on April 30th, the feast day dedicated to his martyrdom. Widely venerated as one of the early champions of Christianity, Saint Mariano of Acerenza and Ripacandida was canonized before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. As a pre-congregation saint, his life and martyrdom serve as a testament to the enduring power of faith in the face of persecution. Today, Saint Mariano of Acerenza is revered as the patron saint of Acerenza and Ripacandida, the towns of his birth and ministry. The faithful from these regions turn to him for intercession, seeking his guidance, protection, and strength during times of struggle and persecution. In honoring his memory, they strive to emulate his example of unwavering faith and love for God.
