Santa María Madalena Postel

Saint Mariemadeleine Postel, also known as Julie Postel, Marie Madeline Postel, and Mary Magdalen Postel, was born on 28 November 1756 in Barfleur, Normandy, France. She grew up amidst a challenging time during the French Revolution. Saint Mariemadeleine was the aunt of Blessed Placide Viel, and she received her education from the Benedictines at Valognes. At the age of 28, Saint Mariemadeleine became the director of a school for girls. However, due to the disturbances caused by the French Revolution, the school eventually closed. Recognizing the dire situation faced by many priests being pursued by the authorities, Saint Mariemadeleine used the school building to provide refuge for these fugitive priests, risking her own safety in the process. At the age of 52, Saint Mariemadeleine became a Franciscan tertiary, taking the name Marie-Madeleine. This marked a significant turning point in her life as she embarked on a deeper spiritual journey. Inspired by her faith, she founded the Poor Daughters of Mercy in Cherbourg, France, in 1807, at the age of 61. The purpose of this congregation was to provide both education and healthcare services to those in need. Under Saint Mariemadeleine's guidance and leadership, the Poor Daughters of Mercy grew rapidly. At the time of her death on 16 July 1846 in Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicoste, France, the congregation had established 37 houses. The Daughters served as teachers and nurses, dedicating themselves to the care of the sick, the education of children, and the spiritual welfare of their communities. Saint Mariemadeleine's life was characterized by her deep commitment to the service of others, particularly the most vulnerable in society. She demonstrated extraordinary courage, resilience, and love, especially during tumultuous times in French history. Her unwavering faith and dedication earned her recognition for her heroic virtues. On 31 May 1903, Pope Leo XIII proclaimed Saint Mariemadeleine Postel as venerable, acknowledging her exemplary life. Later, on 22 January 1908, Pope Pius X beatified her, recognizing her as Blessed Mariemadeleine Postel. Finally, on 24 May 1925, Pope Pius XI canonized her as a saint, acknowledging her as a model of holiness and virtue. Though Saint Mariemadeleine Postel does not have a specific patronage assigned to her, her legacy serves as an inspiration for educators, healthcare workers, and all those engaged in the service of others. Her feast day is celebrated on 16 July, which commemorates the day of her death. Saint Mariemadeleine's life continues to inspire and guide people to this day as an example of selfless devotion and Christian virtue.
