Biografía
Saint Matrona of Thessaloniki was a Christian slave in the household of a Jewish woman. Devout in her faith, Matrona would secretly attend Mass whenever she could. When the lady of the house discovered that her slave had been going to Christian worship, she subjected Matrona to brutal abuse and torture. Despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Matrona refused to renounce her belief in Christ. Her mistress continued to torment her with increasing violence until Matrona was eventually killed for her steadfast faith. She is venerated as a martyr who chose death over apostasy, bearing witness to the power of Christian devotion even in the most oppressive circumstances of slavery.
