San Miguel de Sanctis

Saint Miguel de Sanctis, also known as Michael de Sanctis, Michael of the Saints, Michael the Ecstatic, Michele dei Santi, and Miguel Argemir, was born on September 29, 1591, in Vich, Catalonia, Spain. From a young age, he felt a deep calling to religious life and expressed his desire to become a monk at the tender age of six. Even as a child, he imposed severe austerities on himself, to the point where he had to be restrained. Unfortunately, Miguel was orphaned, and he subsequently became an apprentice to a merchant. However, his heart remained set on joining a monastic community. At the age of 12, he attempted to enter the Trinitarian monastery in Barcelona, Spain. However, due to his young age, he was denied admission. Undeterred, Miguel continued to pursue his vocation. At the age of 15, he took his vows at the monastery of Saint Lambert in Zaragoza, Spain, on September 5, 1607. As he matured in his journey towards holiness, he felt increasingly drawn to a more austere lifestyle. This led him to join the Discalced Trinitarians, a branch of the Trinitarian Order known for their strict observance of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Miguel began his novitiate in Madrid, Spain, and later pursued further studies in Seville and Salamanca. It was in Alcalá, Spain, where he took his final vows. Throughout his life, he displayed a deep commitment to prayer and extraordinary penances. Moreover, his devotion to the Holy Eucharist was particularly profound, and he is said to have experienced moments of ecstatic rapture during the Consecration. Recognizing his piety and holiness, Miguel's fellow religious brothers already considered him a saint during his lifetime. Twice, he was elected as the superior of the Trinitarian monastery at Valladolid, Spain, a position of great responsibility. On April 10, 1625, Saint Miguel de Sanctis passed away in Valladolid, Spain, at the age of 33, from natural causes. His death was mourned by those who knew him, as he was deeply respected and admired for his virtuous life. In recognition of his sanctity, Saint Miguel de Sanctis was beatified on May 24, 1779, by Pope Pius VI. Later, on June 8, 1862, he was canonized by Pope Pius IX. The feast day of Saint Miguel de Sanctis is celebrated on April 10, although it was formerly commemorated on July 5. Saint Miguel de Sanctis is often depicted in artwork kneeling before an altar, where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed. He is remembered as a model of deep faith, intense prayer, and unwavering devotion, particularly to the Holy Eucharist. While he does not have a specific patronage assigned to him, the example of his spirituality and dedication can inspire individuals from all walks of life.
