Early life
Mutien Marie Wiaux, born Louis-Joseph Wiaux, was born on 20 March 1841 at Mellet, in Belgium, and was baptised the same day.[1] After his compulsory schooling he went to work in the workshop of his father, the blacksmith of Mellet, but a few months later felt called to consecrated life.[1] At fifteen, on 7 April 1856, he entered the novitiate of the Fratelli delle Scuole Cristiane, and on the feast of the Visitazione received the habit and his religious name.[1]
Ministry
His first field of teaching was a class of children at Chimay; he then taught for a year in Bruxelles, and in 1859 was transferred to the college of Malonne, where he remained until his death in 1917.[1] Early difficulties, due to his youth and inexperience, put him at risk of being sent away as unsuited to teaching; from then on he was given modest tasks such as supervision and extra lessons in drawing and music, for which he had no particular aptitude, and this for more than fifty years.[1] He asked his superiors to be allowed to teach catechism in the free school attached to the college, to the children of the poor.[1] A confrere who lived with him for many years testified that he observed every article of the rule to the letter.[1] At half past four in the morning he was already kneeling before the tabernacle; during the day the rosary ran through his fingers.[1] His pupils called him 'the brother who always prays'.[1]
Death and recognition
He died on 30 January 1917; on the day of his death favours attributed to his intercession were reported, and crowds of pilgrims soon came to his tomb.[1] He was beatified on 30 October 1977 by Pope Paul VI.[1] He was canonised on 10 December 1989 by Pope John Paul II.[1]
