San Pancharius de Nicomedia

Saint Pancharius of Nicomedia, also known as Pancharius I, was a Roman senator and imperial officer who lived during the 3rd century. Born in Nicomedia, which is now modern-day Turkey, Pancharius served as a favorite of Emperor Maximian, who ruled from 286 to 305. During the early years of his service, Pancharius secretly embraced the Christian faith, even though the Roman Empire was known for its persecution of Christians at the time. Despite his covert beliefs, Pancharius continued to thrive in his position, enjoying the favor and trust of Emperor Maximian. However, his faith would be tested when he received a letter from his mother and sister, both devout Christians. Their correspondence spoke of their unwavering commitment to Christ and encouraged Pancharius to openly confess his own Christian beliefs. Touched by their words, Pancharius made the courageous decision to publicly declare his faith in Christ. This act of defiance did not go unnoticed, and Pancharius faced severe consequences for his newfound allegiance to Christianity. Emperor Maximian, infuriated by his favorite officer's betrayal, ordered Pancharius to renounce his faith or face execution. Undeterred by the threats against his life, Pancharius remained steadfast in his devotion to Christ. Refusing to renounce his beliefs, he was sentenced to death by beheading in the year 303 in Nicomedia, the very city where he was born. The life and martyrdom of Saint Pancharius of Nicomedia have been celebrated and honored by the Catholic Church. His feast day is observed on March 19th.
