Biografía

Saint Paulus Liu Jinde, also known as Baolu and Paul, was a married layman who lived in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China during the late 19th century. He was born around the year 1821 in Lanziqiao, Hengshui, Hebei, China. During the tumultuous period of the Boxer Rebellion, which occurred from 1899 to 1901, Christianity and its followers faced intense persecution in China. In the face of this persecution, many members of Paulus' village renounced their Christian faith in order to save their lives. However, Paulus made a courageous decision to stay loyal to his beliefs. Fueled by a steadfast faith and deep devotion, Paulus went out to meet the Boxers, who were known for their vehement opposition to Christianity. In his hands, he carried a rosary and a prayer book, acts of defiance against those who sought to suppress his religious convictions. Undeterred by the imminent danger he faced, Paulus boldly proclaimed his faith through prayer, even in the face of persecution. Tragically, Paulus Liu Jinde's unwavering commitment to his religion led to his martyrdom. On July 13, 1900, in his hometown of Lanziqiao, Hengshui, Hebei, China, Paulus was brutally killed for his refusal to renounce Christianity. His fearless witness to his faith and his unbreakable spirit in the face of persecution exemplify his strong devotion to God. In recognition of his virtuous life and heroic death, Pope Pius XII declared Paulus Liu Jinde a martyr on February 22, 1955. Just two months later, on April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII beatified him, affirming his holiness and sanctity. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Paulus Liu Jinde, officially recognizing him as a saint of the Catholic Church. Though Saint Paulus Liu Jinde's patronage has not been officially designated, he serves as a model of faith, courage, and devotion for Christians around the world. His story reminds us of the profound sacrifices made by countless individuals who have suffered for their beliefs throughout history and serves as an inspiration for those seeking to live their faith with the same unwavering commitment.
