Biografía

Saint Paulus Wu Anju, also known as Baolu or Wu Anju Paulus, was a married layman in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China. He was born around 1838 in Xihetou, Shenzhou, Hebei, China. Saint Paulus Wu Anju was a devoted husband and father, known for his unwavering faith and commitment to the Catholic Church. Wu Anju was married and his son, Saint Ioannes Baptista Wu Mantang, later became a renowned martyr and saint. Additionally, Wu Anju was the uncle of another saint, Saint Paulus Wu Wanshu, who also played a significant role in the growth of the Catholic faith in China. During the Boxer Rebellion, a violent anti-imperialist and anti-Christian movement in China, Wu Anju faced severe persecution for his faith. Despite the dangers and threats he encountered, he never renounced his beliefs. He chose to remain steadfast in his commitment to Christ, even in the face of grave adversity. Wu Anju was martyred on June 29, 1900, in Xiaoluyi, Shenzhou, Hebei, China. He bravely endured torture and persecution, ultimately sacrificing his life for his unwavering devotion to God. His martyrdom and steadfastness in the face of persecution served as a powerful witness to his fellow Catholics and inspired many others to stand firm in their faith. In recognition of his incredible sacrifice and devotion, Pope Pius XII declared Wu Anju venerable on February 22, 1955, issuing a decree of martyrdom. Just two months later, on April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII beatified him, acknowledging his heroism and holiness. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Wu Anju was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II. As a canonized saint of the Catholic Church, Saint Paulus Wu Anju serves as a shining example of faith and courage, particularly in times of persecution. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire and strengthen the faithful, both in China and throughout the world. Though not a patron saint of any particular cause or profession, his profound witness of faith and his unwavering commitment to Christ make him a source of inspiration and intercession for all those seeking strength, courage, and perseverance in their own spiritual journeys.
