Biografía

Saint Pedro Esqueda Ramírez, also known as Pedro Esqueda, was born on 29 April 1887 in San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco, in the diocese of San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico. He dedicated his life to the service of God as a priest and became known for his immense devotion to the Catholic faith. Pedro Esqueda was ordained as a priest and served as the Vicar-general of the diocese of San Juan de los Lagos. It was during his time in this position that he discerned a need for religious education for children and recognized the importance of providing them with a strong foundation in their faith. In response, he founded catechetical study centers, which aimed to teach children about Catholic doctrines and practices, helping them to deepen their understanding and love for God. Saint Pedro Esqueda was deeply committed to his mission and worked tirelessly to ensure that young Catholics received proper religious instruction. Despite the challenges and obstacles he faced, his dedication and passion for educating children in the faith never wavered. His catechetical study centers soon became a source of spiritual nourishment and guidance for countless young souls. Sadly, the situation in Mexico at that time was tense, with a strong anti-Catholic sentiment prevalent throughout the country. The Mexican Revolution had left a deep impact on society, and the Catholic Church and its clergy were targets of persecution by the government. As a result, many priests and religious were martyred for their faith. Tragically, on 22 November 1927, Saint Pedro Esqueda was shot three times in Teocaltitán, Jalisco, Mexico, as a victim of this fierce persecution. Despite the threats and dangers he faced, he remained firm in his commitment to God and the teachings of the Catholic Church. His martyrdom serves as a testimony to his unwavering faith and dedication to the service of God and his people. Following his death, Saint Pedro Esqueda was buried at the church of San Juan Bautista in San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco, in the diocese of San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico. His life and sacrifice were recognized by Pope John Paul II, who declared him venerable on 7 March 1992, acknowledging his martyrdom. Later that year, on 22 November, Saint Pedro Esqueda was beatified by Pope John Paul II. Finally, on 21 May 2000, he was canonized by the same pontiff, solidifying his place among the saints of the Catholic Church. Although Saint Pedro Esqueda Ramírez does not have a known specific representation, his example of courage, faith, and dedication continues to inspire Catholics around the world. His feast days are celebrated on 22 November and 21 May as one of the Martyrs of the Mexican Revolution. While not yet recognized as a patron saint, Saint Pedro Esqueda's intercession is sought by those who face religious persecution, as well as those devoted to religious education and the spiritual formation of children.
