Saint Pontius of Cimiez, also known as Pontianus or Ponzio, was born into a pagan imperial Roman senatorial family in an era of great persecution for Christians. He was the son of Marcus and Julia, who belonged to a prominent societal position. Little is known about his early life or his conversion to Christianity, but his devout faith in the face of severe persecution ultimately led to his martyrdom.
