Biografía

Saint Protus of Sassari, also known as Proto, was a priest who lived in Sardinia during the 3rd century. He was born in Sassari and dedicated his life to serving the Catholic Church in his hometown. During this time, Sardinia was under the rule of the Roman Empire, and Emperor Diocletian initiated a fierce persecution against Christians. Protus, being a devout Christian and a respected priest, became a target of this persecution. Despite the danger, he continued to preach the Gospel and provide spiritual guidance to the faithful in Sassari. The exact details of Protus' martyrdom are sketchy, but it is believed that he was apprehended by the authorities and brought to trial for his refusal to renounce his faith. He steadfastly stood by his beliefs and refused to worship the Roman gods, which led to his condemnation to death. On October 25th, 303, Protus was beheaded in the city of Porto Torres, not far from Sassari. His martyrdom is seen as a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to Christ, even in the face of persecution and death. In recognition of his martyrdom and his deep spiritual impact on the people of Sassari, Saint Protus was venerated as a saint soon after his death. His canonization, along with many other early Christian saints, took place long before the formal Congregation for the Causes of Saints was established by the Catholic Church. Therefore, he is regarded as a saint of the Pre-Congregation era. Sassari, the city where Protus lived and served, holds a special place in the devotion to this saint. The Archdiocese of Sassari, which encompasses the city and the surrounding area, reveres him as a patron saint. His feast day is celebrated on October 25th each year, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. Saint Protus of Sassari is remembered for his courage, faithfulness, and love for God in the face of persecution. His life serves as an inspiration to Christians in Italy and beyond, reminding them of the importance of staying true to their beliefs, even in challenging times.
