Biografía

Saint Saturninus of Hadrumetum, also known as Saint Saturninus of Sousse, is revered as one of the 26 martyrs who were killed by the Vandals in the 5th century. Little is known about his early life and background, but his courageous witness for the faith has made him a revered figure in Christian history. Saint Saturninus lived during a time when Christianity was spreading throughout North Africa, but it was also a challenging period of persecution. His martyrdom took place around the year 434 in Hadrumetum, which is now known as Sousse, Tunisia. The Vandals, a Germanic tribe that had invaded North Africa, were at that time known for their cruel treatment of Christians. Saint Saturninus was part of a group of Christian believers who staunchly held onto their faith despite the hostile circumstances they found themselves in. They chose to stand for Christ and resist the pressures to renounce their beliefs. This group of 26 martyrs includes men, women, and children, and they became a symbol of collective courage in the face of adversity. The details of Saint Saturninus' martyrdom are not widely recorded, but his death is believed to have been a result of his refusal to renounce his faith. The Vandals, known for their brutal tactics, took the lives of these 26 martyrs as a means to suppress and terrorize the Christian community. However, their martyrdom had the opposite effect, serving as a powerful witness and catalyst for the growth of Christianity in the region. Though Saint Saturninus' representation in art is not explicitly documented, it is likely that he is depicted in the company of the other martyrs who shared his fate. As a pre-Congregation saint, his canonization occurred prior to the establishment of some formal canonization processes. Without a specific patronage attributed to him, he is still venerated for his unwavering faith and sacrifice. Saint Saturninus of Hadrumetum is remembered and honored on the feast day of February 21st. On this day, faithful believers reflect upon his steadfastness and draw inspiration from his example of faith in the face of persecution. His life continues to serve as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the willingness to stand firm in the face of adversity.
