Biografía

Saint Turibius of Astorga, also known as Toribi, Toribio, and Turrybiusz, was a revered Catholic bishop who served as the Bishop of Astorga in northwest Spain. Born around 402 in Betanzos, Visigothic kingdom of Toledo (in modern Spain), he dedicated his life to upholding the principles of the Catholic faith. Saint Turibius emerged as a strong figure in the Church, known for his strict disciplinary measures. He ardently adhered to the teachings of the Church and became a staunch opponent of the Priscillianist heresy, which rejected the divinity of Christ and advocated a dualistic worldview. In defense of true Catholic doctrine, Saint Turibius fearlessly combatted the influence of the Priscillianists, resolutely asserting the orthodox teachings of Jesus Christ. Furthermore, Saint Turibius was a great supporter and advocate of Pope Saint Leo the Great. During his tenure as Bishop of Astorga, he actively promoted the papal authority and teachings of Pope Leo. This adherence to the papal authority positioned him as a steadfast ally of the Church's central leadership, contributing to the strengthening of the Church in that era. Saint Turibius passed away around 460 in Tui, Spain, from natural causes. He was laid to rest at the monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana in Cantabria, Spain. Notably, he had been canonized before the formal establishment of the Catholic Church's Congregation for the Causes of Saints, thus belonging to the pre-congregation canonization era. As a result of his impactful life and unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith, Saint Turibius became widely venerated as a saint. He is honored and celebrated on April 16th each year, the day of his feast. The significance of Saint Turibius of Astorga extends beyond his theological convictions and opposition to heresy. He holds a special place as the patron saint of Astorga, Spain, and the diocese of Astorga. His legacy continues to inspire and guide the faithful in their pursuit of a deeper understanding and practice of the Catholic faith in the region.
