Born into the secular world, he entered the religious life as a canon regular at the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire-de-la-Celle, where he cultivated a deep commitment to monastic and clerical reform. In 1184, he was appointed Bishop of Poitiers, a position he assumed with unwavering dedication to the spiritual welfare
