Saint Giuse Ðặng Văn Viên
Feast Day
August 21
Biography
In the annals of the Vietnamese Church, where faith was often measured in the shedding of blood, few witnesses stand as starkly against the shadow of imperial persecution as the priest Giuse Đặng Văn Viên. His life was not marked by the public acclaim of a founder or the scholarly renown of a theologian, but by the profound and silent witness of a shepherd who refused to abandon his flock amidst the gathering storm. To be a priest in Tonkin during the reign of Emperor Minh Mang was to live under a constant cloud of suspicion, where the administration of the sacraments was deemed an act of rebellion against the state. It is within this crucible of intense hostility that the remarkable nature of this man's vocation is best understood.
