Biography

Pope Martin I, also known as Martin the Confessor, was born between 590 and 600 and served as Pope from 21 July 649 to either 653 or 654. He had previously been an ambassador to Constantinople under Pope Theodore I before being elected pope. Known for his staunch opposition to Monothelitism, Martin I faced severe consequences when he opposed the emperor's policies. Emperor Constans II arrested him and exiled him to Cherson, where he died on 16 September 655. He is recognized as a saint by both the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church, and though traditionally considered a martyr, his death was not officially declared as such by the Church.
