Biography

Blessed Ángel De Tena Martín was a dedicated priest in the diocese of Córdoba, Spain. He served as an assistant pastor in the Hinojosa community, faithfully tending to the spiritual needs of the faithful. He was born on September 9, 1883, in the town of Benquerencia, located in the province of Badajoz, Spain.

Throughout his life, Blessed Ángel De Tena Martín exhibited unwavering commitment to his Christian faith and his vocation as a priest. He wholeheartedly embraced his role as a shepherd of the Catholic community, guiding and inspiring his congregation towards a life of piety and devotion.

Sadly, during a time of great upheaval in Spain's history, the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Ángel De Tena Martín met a tragic end. On August 23, 1936, in the town of Hinojosa del Duque, Córdoba, he was martyred for his unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his religious convictions.

The courageous martyrdom of Blessed Ángel De Tena Martín has not gone unnoticed. On November 23, 2020, Pope Francis, recognizing the heroic virtue and sacrifice of this devout priest, officially declared him venerable.

Then, on October 16, 2021, a special ceremony took place at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain, presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro. During this momentous occasion, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Ángel De Tena Martín, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed" and acknowledging his sanctity.
