Biography

Blessed Özséb of Esztergom, also known as Esztergomi Boldog Özséb, Euzebiusz z Ostrzyhomia, Eusebius von Gran, and Eusebius of Esztergom, was born around the year 1200 in Esztergom, Komárom-Esztergom, Hungary. He hailed from a wealthy Hungarian noble family and from an early age demonstrated remarkable intelligence and a strong faith. Even as a child, Özséb displayed a preference for solitude, prayer, and contemplation.

After completing his studies at the Esztergom Seminary, Özséb was ordained as a priest in the diocese of Esztergom, Hungary. He soon became a canon of the cathedral chapter of Strigonio, which is part of modern Esztergom. Despite his prestigious position, Özséb made the decision to give away all his earnings, stipends, and wealth to the poor. This act of selflessness exemplified his dedication to following the teachings of Christ.

Özséb is believed to have authored several books on canon law; however, none of his writings have survived to the present day. His deep understanding of Church law and his commitment to serving the needy drew admiration and respect from those around him.

In 1246, Father Özséb chose to retire from his active priestly ministry and live as a devout hermit in the mountains of Pilis. Word of his extraordinary holiness and wisdom quickly spread, and he began to attract numerous individuals seeking spiritual guidance. Recognizing the need for a structured religious community for these disciples, Özséb founded the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit, also known as the Hermits of the Holy Cross.

In 1250, Özséb established a monastery and church to provide a home and a rule of life for these spiritual seekers. The Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit, inspired by the teachings and example of Özséb, aimed to cultivate a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to others. This community flourished under Özséb's leadership, drawing individuals eager to follow his example of selflessness and unwavering devotion.

Blessed Özséb of Esztergom peacefully passed away on 20 January 1270 in Szentkereszt, modern-day Pilisszentkereszt, Pest, Hungary. His death was attributed to natural causes. Throughout the centuries, a popular devotion to Özséb has remained alive among the faithful. On 16 November 2004, the liturgical date to commemorate his feast day was approved by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Furthermore, on 8 February 2009, Pope Benedict XVI confirmed the cultus of Özséb, officially beatifying him and recognizing his holiness and virtuous life.

Blessed Özséb of Esztergom is remembered as a devoted priest, scholar, hermit, and founder of the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit. His life serves as a powerful example of selflessness, dedication to prayer, and unwavering faith in God. Through his teachings and the community he established, Özséb continues to inspire others to live lives of spiritual depth and humility.
