Biography

Blessed Alejandro Iñiguez De Heredia Alzola, also known as Mauricio, was a Catholic monk and a member of the Hospitallers of Saint John of God. He was born on February 8, 1877, in Dallo, Ávila, Spain. From an early age, Alejandro dedicated himself to a life of faith and service to others.

Joining the Hospitallers of Saint John of God, Alejandro lived a life of devotion to the sick and needy. He performed his duties within the congregation with utmost dedication, inspiring those around him with his compassion and selflessness. His unwavering commitment to his vocation made him a beloved member of the order.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Alejandro found himself in an increasingly hostile environment. As political tensions rose, religious persecution began to escalate, particularly targeting clergy and religious individuals like Alejandro. Despite the danger, he remained resolute in his faith and continued to provide comfort and care to those in need.

However, on August 28, 1936, in the city of Barcelona, Spain, Alejandro's life was tragically cut short. He was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith and his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs. His death was a testament to his courage and steadfastness in the face of persecution.

Years later, on July 5, 2013, Pope Francis recognized Alejandro Iñiguez De Heredia Alzola's martyrdom, venerated him, and issued a decree acknowledging his heroic sacrifice. On October 13, 2013, in a beatification ceremony, Pope Francis officially declared Alejandro blessed.
