Biography

Blessed Alfonso López Morales, also known as Father Alfonso, was a devout Catholic priest of the diocese of Córdoba, Spain. He was born on January 23, 1871, in El Viso de los Pedroches, Córdoba. Growing up in a deeply religious family, Alfonso developed a strong faith and felt a calling to the priesthood from a young age.

After completing his studies in theology, Alfonso was ordained as a priest and dedicated himself to serving the faithful in the Santa Eufemia community, located in the province of Córdoba. He became the parish priest of Santa Eufemia, where he shared his wisdom and spiritual guidance with his congregation.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant, and numerous priests, religious brothers and sisters, and lay faithful were targeted for their faith. Sadly, Blessed Alfonso López Morales became one of the victims of this persecution.

On August 17, 1936, in Santa Eufemia, Córdoba, Father Alfonso was arrested and martyred for his unwavering commitment to Catholicism. He bravely refused to renounce his faith and remained a symbol of courage and steadfastness in the face of persecution. His martyrdom serves as a testament to his unwavering devotion to his faith and his commitment to his parishioners.

Blessed Alfonso López Morales was formally venerated by Pope Francis on November 23, 2020, with a decree of martyrdom, recognizing his heroic sacrifice. On October 16, 2021, Pope Francis beatified Father Alfonso in a ceremony celebrated at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, further highlighting the significance of Father Alfonso's martyrdom.

Today, Blessed Alfonso López Morales is held as an example of unwavering faith and devotion, reminding Catholics around the world of the sacrifices made by countless individuals during times of persecution. His feast day is celebrated on August 17, commemorating the day of his martyrdom.
