Biography
Blessed Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster, also known as Alfredo Ludovico Luigi Schuster, was born on 18 January 1880 in Rome, Italy. At the age of 11, he began his education at Saint-Paul-Outside-the-Walls abbey in Rome. His deep commitment to the faith led him to enter the Cassinese Benedictine monastic novitiate in 1896, where he took the name Ildefonso. On 13 November 1900, he made his formal monastic confession and was ordained as a priest on 19 March 1904 in Rome.
Throughout his life, Blessed Alfredo Schuster held various positions of leadership within the Church. He served as the novice master of his house from 1908 to 1916 and later became the prior of the abbey from 1916 to 1918. From 1914 to 1929, he also worked as the procurator general of the Congregation of Monte Cassino. On 6 April 1918, he was appointed as the abbot-ordinary of the abbey nullius of Saint-Paul-Outside-the-Walls.
Blessed Alfredo Schuster's dedication to his vocation extended to academia as well. He served as the president of the Pontifical Oriental Institute from 1919 to 1922 and taught at various colleges and institutes. He also contributed to the Church through his consultancy work for the Sacred Congregation of Rites, specifically in the sections for the Liturgy and for the Causes of Saints. Additionally, he served as the censor of the Academy of Sacred Liturgy.
On 26 June 1929, Blessed Alfredo Schuster's exceptional qualities and service to the Church were recognized when Pope Pius XI appointed him as the Archbishop of Milan. He was later created cardinal on 15 July 1929. As Archbishop, he oversaw the administration of the Archdiocese and took on several important roles, including being a papal legate to various events and congresses in Europe.
During the investigation of his Cause for canonization, there were some allegations of his sympathy towards Fascism. However, evidence surfaced to dispel these claims, showing that Blessed Alfredo Schuster denounced Fascism's interference with the Catholic Action youth organization. He refused to participate in ceremonies involving Mussolini and publicly condemned racist legislation.
The primary focus of Blessed Alfredo Schuster's pastoral efforts was the spiritual well-being of his flock. He also worked tirelessly to address the physical needs of the poor, alongside providing assistance to newly married couples with the aim of establishing strong and stable marriages. He had a deep commitment to the cultural and artistic aspects of the Church and founded the Institute of Amrosian Chant and Sacred Music, as well as the Ambrosianeum and Didascaleion cultural centers.
Blessed Alfredo Ildefonso Schuster passed away on 30 August 1954 in Venegono, Italy, due to natural causes. He was buried in the Metropolitan Cathedral in Milan, Italy, where he had faithfully served as Archbishop. He was venerated on 26 March 1994 by Pope John Paul II, who declared his heroic virtues. Pope John Paul II then beatified him on 12 May 1996.
