Biography

Blessed Andrés Soto Carrera, also known as Gil of Puerto de Santa María, was a distinguished Franciscan Capuchin priest who met a tragic fate during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on June 29, 1883, in Puerto de Santa María, Seville, Spain.

Throughout his early years, Blessed Andrés Soto Carrera displayed a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to serve the Church. This led him to join the Capuchin Franciscan Order, where he dedicated himself to a life of prayer, study, and selfless service.

Ordained as a priest, Blessed Andrés Soto Carrera fervently worked to spread the teachings of the Gospel and promote God's love and compassion among the faithful. His ministry was characterized by his unwavering commitment to the poor, the sick, and the marginalized.

Unfortunately, his tireless efforts were cut short by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, a devastating conflict that rocked the nation. As tensions and hostilities escalated, numerous religious figures, including Catholic clergy, became targets of persecution and violence.

Tragically, on August 6, 1936, in the town of Antequera, Málaga, Spain, Blessed Andrés Soto Carrera fell victim to this wave of anti-Catholic sentiment. He was unjustly martyred for his faith, becoming a symbol of courage and steadfastness in the face of religious persecution.

For many years, the memory of Blessed Andrés Soto Carrera was honored by the faithful who recognized his martyrdom and revered his dedication to Christ. Finally, on March 27, 2013, Pope Francis officially recognized his martyrdom with a decree, acknowledging the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith and the Church.

Subsequently, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Andrés Soto Carrera, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed." This papal recognition elevated him to a position of honor and veneration among Catholic devotees, who now commemorate his feast day on August 6th each year.

Blessed Andrés Soto Carrera's life serves as an enduring testament to the unwavering faith and unwavering commitment to the principles of justice, compassion, and selflessness in the face of adversity. May his example continue to inspire and guide in our own spiritual journey.
