Biography

Blessed Andrés Zarraquino Herrero, also known as Brother Honorato Andrés, was a devout member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious congregation founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle. He was born on April 18, 1908, in Bañón, a small town in the province of Teruel, Spain.

On July 27, 1924, Andrés Zarraquino Herrero joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Cambrils, demonstrating his commitment to a life of service and education. He took the religious habit on August 15, 1925, adopting the name Brother Honorato Andrés.

After completing his formation, Brother Honorato Andrés began his teaching career in Tortosa and later in Gracia, both in Spain. Eventually, he was assigned to the College of Our Lady of Bonanova in Barcelona, where he continued his educational work with great dedication and love for the students entrusted to his care.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Honorato Andrés was martyred for his faith on October 22, 1936, in Benimaclet, Valencia, Spain. In the face of rampant persecution against Catholics, he courageously stood firm in his beliefs, ultimately giving his life as a testimony to his unwavering commitment to Christ.

Recognizing the sanctity of his life and the sacrifice he made, Pope John Paul II declared Brother Honorato Andrés Zarraquino Herrero a martyr on December 20, 1999. This declaration emphasized his heroic witness to the Catholic faith and the virtues he exemplified throughout his life.

On March 11, 2001, Pope John Paul II further recognized his sanctity by beatifying him, bestowing the title of Blessed Andrés Zarraquino Herrero upon him. This beatification ceremony honored Brother Honorato Andrés as a model of faith, inspiring others to live their lives in devotion to God and selfless service to their fellow human beings.

Today, Blessed Andrés Zarraquino Herrero is remembered and venerated as a shining example of Christian virtue and martyrdom. His feast day is celebrated on October 22nd each year, providing an opportunity for the faithful to honor his memory and seek his intercession.
